According to my Substack archive, my last notes from the week was back in March. A lot has changed since then and I’m definitely planning on writing about it here in time, but for the moment I’m going to focus on the past week. I enjoy these little chatty posts, it feels like writing a journal or a diary, archiving my life for later perusal.
I’ve been loving the autumnal leaves recently, they’re in full force here in Inverness, and miraculously haven’t all blown away yet. We took the dogs for a favourite walk, a 5km loop with a conveniently located cafe (complete with red squirrel viewing area!) by the car park.
As the weather cools down, I tend to go into cooking mode. I enjoy cooking throughout the year, but there’s something about being snuggled into a warm kitchen, whilst the nights draw in and the weather worsens, creating something warming and hearty to eat, that really appeals to me this time of year. I experimented making ramen for the first time (including a visit to my local Asian supermarket), and whilst it wasn’t a complete success, I definitely learned a lot and know what to do differently next time. The resulting ramen was edible, but needed some tweaks. We’re having the second, altered batch for dinner tomorrow, so fingers crossed it’s improved with my changes!
There are still some mild enough days, when the sun shines through the autumnal leaves, to sit outside and knit. Andrew makes us both a coffee and we sit in the waning sunbeams, listening to the wind in the trees and the bird song. It’s very relaxing and peaceful. This lovely autumnal coloured crochet blanket, made for me as a wedding present by an old pal, is the perfect lap blanket for outdoor knitting.
Last time I wrote a notes from the week, I was working on my Heirloom Quilt cardi. Funnily enough, I’m still working on the same pattern, but for my mum rather than me! I’m using the same batch of thrifted tapestry yarns, this time with all the pastel colours picked out, since that’s my mum’s preferred colour palate. I’ve nearly finished knitting the squares (currently on number 26 of 27). I’ll then be using thrifted nutiden, most likely held double, to knit the sleeves, bottom hem and neckband. I’m really hoping to have enough nutiden, it was second hand so I can’t easily get a replacement skein if I run out!
From me and my giant cable knit sweater, a gift from a friend of an unwanted, unworn jumper I’m currently frogging to reuse the yarn, I bid you adieu and will (hopefully!) write another one of these sooner than 6 months from now!
Now that's what I call over-sized! You're going to have so much lovely yarn to re-use. I do love the Heritage quilt cardigan - what weight of wool would be equivalent to the tapestry yarn? 4 ply or DK?
Oh my! The work that went into the beautiful cabled jumper!! It's wonderful you can reuse the yarn. Do you have plans for what you'll do with it?
