Life update

We're moving to the Highlands!

I try to write once a week here on the blog, about sewing, knitting, and general sustainability topics. I have posts brewing about beekeeping, sewing with kimono silk, a pair of jeans, a knitting project, and revisiting old makes to see how they fare. I’m currently falling behind my own self-imposed time schedule, and wanted to pop on quickly to give a wee life update. I’m not berating myself for my lack of posting (old Amy would have done!) because I recognise that in this season of life, something has to give. I’m grateful for some of my hobbies, like knitting, for tiding me through stressful times, and I’m grateful others, like writing, that are happy to sit in a metaphorical cupboard until I’m ready to pick them up again. I also only want to post here when I feel like I have something significant, interesting or entertaining to say. I’m not interested in filler posts to fit a schedule. I’ve experienced them on other people’s blogs and always feel like they dilute the more compelling content.

I wrote recently about our upcoming move to Inverness. We’re now around 2 weeks away from me finishing in my current job, and us officially no longer being residents of Edinburgh. It’s a strange feeling, we’ve lived here for around 16 years. It’s the city that’s seen us through me completing vet school, Andrew’s first job at the parliament, us getting engaged and then married, our first dog, Andrew starting his own business, buying our first flat, our second and additional dog, and so many other life events, both big and small. This really feels like a chapter in our lives coming to a close, which is a bittersweet feeling for me. I’m beyond excited for my garden era to begin, the doggies to have outdoor space, smaller city living, more walking and less driving, to have the incredible countryside of the Highlands on our doorstep. Equally, there are a lot of unknowns ahead of us. We don’t know yet where we’re going to live, we’re lucky to be able to stay with family whilst we get ourselves sorted with a house. We’ll be replacing the current daily aggravations, from which we’re escaping, with other, different stressors. I’m not very good with change, even positive change. So many unknown unknowns…

Still, overall this is a positive move for our family. To have more space, both inside and out, will be such an amazing gift. The doggies can soak themselves in the sunbeams in the garden, whilst I knit and potter. On rainy days we can courie inside with the stove on, or nap with the rain drumming on the roof. My new job is a 10 minute walk from my in-laws, as opposed to 40min-to-over-an-hour commute in the car.

Thank you for your patience whilst we navigate this change. I’ve got a few posts in drafts, that may or may not go out in the next few weeks. Overall, I’m removing any additional, self-imposed stress or deadlines from myself over the next few months. We should be settled in our new, albeit temporary, home by July. I will definitely still be crafting in this time, I’ve currently got two works-in-progress on my knitting needles and three in progress sewing projects. I just might not make time to photograph and write these up until later in the summer. In the meantime, thank you for being here :)
