It’s time for another edition of thrifted & handmade outfit of the day! It’s been a busy couple of weeks and I’ve been buried in life admin and family responsibilities, alongside a super fun trip with my besties. I haven’t had much opportunity to vary my outfits and that’s OK, the most sustainable item of clothing is the one you already own after all.
Overall, I’ve been feeling…I don’t know what the best word is, uninspired I guess? My go-to uniform of jeans + white tee + sweater/cardi is a good ‘un, I feel comfortable and like myself when I wear it. But I also feel like I need more variety. I have a selection of non-white tees (burgundy, navy and green) but no knitwear to go with them. I wear the same two pairs of jeans on rotation - one straight leg and one skinny. I’m inspired by the barrel jean trend at the moment, but a bit scared to step out of my comfort zone, since trouser shopping or sewing is often bound up in feelings of body dysmorphia and/or fat phobia for me. I’m planning on sewing a pair of Modern Sewing Company worker trousers, but I’m worried they’ll be a fail and it’ll make me feel bad about myself.
So. Many. Feelings.
Anyway, for now I’m sticking with things that make me feel good.
Day one: work uniform
Handmade: Jared Flood ‘Fort’ menswear sweater, knit in thrifted and holiday yarn / Closet Core Morgan jeans
I mostly wear this outfit to work because I get changed into scrubs as soon as I arrive and everything is easy to take off!
Day two: gym session
Inner layer
Handmade: Stoff & Stil sweater pattern in thrifted jersey / PetiteKnit Oslo hat to hide greasy bed hair
Outer layer
Handmade: burgundy cowl from thrifted jersey / Stoff & Stil sweater
Thrifted: Trespass down jacket via Vinted / Sweaty Betty leggings via Vinted
Slightly odd giant-forehead angle courtesy of the fact we’re not supposed to use cameras in the changing rooms, so I was trying to be quick post-shower.
Day three: trip to work with old Badger
Mostly I put this photo in for a variety of photo locations, but also to illustrate that ‘thrifted’ can also include ‘wearing your husband’s hot pink sweater’.
Day four: trip with my besties
I had planned to meticulously document my outfits whilst I was away, but was too busy having fun. Which is a shame because on one night, I wore a memorable combo of merino hiking socks, Adidas sliders (via Vinted), one piece shortie swimming costume, PetiteKnit cardi and Oslo hat, just to walk 4 paces to the hot tub. In my defense, it was very chilly plus gently raining, but it was probably still overkill and all my knitwear got wet.
Thrifted: Marks & Spencer skinny jeans via the charity shop / Uniglo down jacket via Vinted
Handmade: burgundy jersey cowl / refashioned menswear H&M cotton shirt
Day five: gym session
Thrifted: Levi’s denim jacket via Vinted / Sweaty Betty leggings via Vinted / Nike running top via Vinted
I wanted to show off my sample sale Dastardly Line textile waste V&A bag. You can read more about this amazing line of bags here but I was very lucky to pick one up in a sample sale. I love it, and although I don’t tend to use a shoulder bag very often, it’s perfect for trips to the gym. My trusty self-drafted gym bag carries all my damp or sweaty items, whilst the shoulder bag holds headphones, water bottle, snacks and sundries.
